So, what is the Trager® Approach?

Reminiscent of massage, the Trager Approach is its own distinctive form of bodywork. It combines table work and movement re-education. Trager brings into your awareness a sense of peace, joy and connectedness by mimicking the undulating movement of waves. It’s a gentle way of working with the nervous system using rhythmic movements like rocking, jostling, shimmering and elongation and includes compressions and pauses to integrate the work. These fluid, flowing and playful motions lull your mindbody into a harmonious state, releasing tension and softening the edges of physical, mental and emotional patterns; it’s a way to let go from that which holds you back. Trager can help create such a sense of lightness and ease, that the weight of seriousness can lift and joy can take its place so you are left feeling effervescent, refreshed and rejuvenated. Trager is a mind-body experience. It’s delightful and surprising to feel the depth that subtle movement can reach within the body and the Trager moves can be felt throughout the entire body all at the same time leaving one with a deep sense of connection.

Move with Mentastics!

Another aspect of the Trager Approach is a form of movement re-education coined Mentastics by the founder of the method, Dr. Milton Trager. Mentastics is a word that combines the words mental and gymnastics. Mentastics are self-initiated, self-care moves. Through Mentastics, one experiences how using gentle, mindful movements practiced with feeling and intention enhances body awareness and ease of motion. It is a way to incorporate the Trager principles into daily life, and helps to recall the pleasure of having received the work, and fosters a deeper connection to one’s own body.

Trager is gentle and pain-free

Trager is always gentle and an important edict of it is to not cause discomfort or pain. To assist in releasing tension for a client, the practitioner cannot introduce tension into their own body. Should the client tense up while receiving a Trager session, the Trager practitioner slows down, uses softness, less effort and relaxes themselves even more, to release any of their own tension so that they don’t transmit feelings of tension onto the client. This level of attunement contributes to an environment of safety and nurturing. Trager gives you a sense of freedom in your body, in your movement, in your thoughts and in your emotions.

With Trager, oil is not used and the client can remain dressed in loose comfortable clothing or in their underwear.

Who would benefit from the
Trager
® Approach?

Because the Trager Approach is inherently gentle, it can be performed on most everybody and modified for special conditions. Often, Trager is appealing to those who (a) prefer a softer touch than other forms of massage and bodywork, (b) would rather remain clothed because it feels safe or convenient, (c) may be suffering from stress, anxiety, grief or trauma, (d) are explorers of consciousness and the mind-body connection, or (e) simply curious and just want to try something different all the while relieving the tension in their body and their mind. Historically, Dr. Trager, the developer of the Approach, used it to help people with conditions like post-polio paralysis, Parkinson’s, cerebral palsy, and multiple sclerosis to re-education and soothe the nervous system.

If you’re interested in a unique blend of gentle bodywork that nurtures your spirit as much as it relaxes your body, celebrates the beauty of movement and the freedom it can bring, I invite you to experience the Trager Approach with me. I am dedicated to creating a warm and welcoming space where you can truly let go, feel cared for, and rediscover a sense of peace. Let’s embark on this journey together.
